Self-cleaning hydrophobic coating repels the dust and dirt contaminants by sliding away or rolling off the particles from its surface. Meanwhile, a self-cleaning hydrophilic coating is assisted by a photocatalysis mechanism to diminish the pollutants and dust on its surface under UV radiation.

The superhydrophobic coating on the glass surface shows great application values for material requirements of high light transmission and mechanical stability. This paper summarises problems of dust and ice accumulation and its cleaning technologies for PV modules, and the basic principle and development of superhydrophobicity are introduced.
